About Bansko

Bansko is situated at the foot of the majestic Pirin mountain, 160 km from Sofia and 60 km from Blagoevgrad, at an altitude of 950 m. The town has a population of about 12,000.
Bansko is among those Bulgarian towns which Fate had destined to play a noteworthy role in the historic development of the Bulgarian nation, especially during the colossal national upsurge during the Revival Period. Its achievements cannot be touched by the relentless passage of time. They lie in the unique houses of Banskalii (the people from Bansko) with their tall pinewood gates and carved-wood ceilings, in the architecture and the fine iconostasis of churches, in the daring brushstroke of the icons painted by local iconographers, for here Past and Present are interwoven in a way that is distinctive and original at the same time
It is a common misconception that Bansko is only a winter destination but it is also a wonderful peaceful town during the warmer months and there are more activities to keep visitors entertained during the summer than in the winter: Rafting, rock climbing, golf (soon), mineral spas and paragliding to mention some. It has been promoted as the latest Bulgarian gem - a modern developing ski resort, only recently attracting large numbers of foreign visitors. The actual resort itself is located above 2000 metres with 2 of the peaks at almost 3000 metres; there are excellent modern facilities and ski runs for all levels of ability and with ideal climate conditions perfect for skiing and snow boarding purposes. The atmosphere there is relaxed yet invigorating with its cobbled lanes where the timber - framed stone houses hide behind walls with thick double doors as if built to resist a siege. The community cherishes its customs and traditions whilst moving into the future with the booming ski industry.
